Mumbai: Students from seven Jesuit schools in the state will be taught coding from class VII. Jesuit School Education Board Bombay Province, which has under its aegis Campion (Fort), St Mary’s (Mazgaon), St Xavier’s (Fort), St Stanislaus (Bandra) schools, among others, has decided to teach Python language in a simplified manner, as ‘they want their students to think logically and analytically using computer languages’ and also because ‘Google, the best search engine, uses Python for its search algorithm’.
In fact, the board has published a book – The Joy of Python – with help from faculty of Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE), Mahim. The book was released by Fr Frazer Mascarenhas, former principal of St Xavier’s College, on Monday, to mark the 160th anniversary of St Stanislaus School. “Currently, students from class IX are exposed to computer languages such as Java. But Python is widely used in computer systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning and is simpler to understand,” said Fr John Rose from XIE. The training will start only for class VII in the first year. The book, to be used in higher classes too, was conceptualised by five authors.
Principal of St Stanislaus, Sister Arockia, said the school will train students in coding for at least an hour a week now. tnn
